2012-13 Charlotte-Area Basketball: Girls’ Games to Watch

Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Waddell Friday-Saturday: Stacked field with state championship contenders like Berry, Charlotte Christian and Providence Day. Top game rare public-private meeting with Berry vs. Providence Day on Friday at 6:30.

Ardrey Kell at Harding, Nov. 20: Harding has a very tough assignment in its first game back since winning the N.C. 3A state title last season: a serious N.C. 4A state title contender this year.

Myers Park at Berry, Nov. 27: Some of the area’s top individual talents and teams meet in a huge non-conference game.

Ardrey Kell at Weddington, Nov. 27: Ardrey Kell has a super freshman in 6-0 Erin Whalen, who can play four positions. Weddington super sophomore Stephanie Watts has multiple Division I offers.

Lake Norman Charter at Hough, Nov. 30: Lake Norman Charter is a 1A-sized charter school but it’s making big-time rivalries with the 4A schools out on the north end. Here’s a big one.

Hickory at Charlotte Christian, Dec. 4: Both teams have legitimate shots at 3A public and private schools championships.

West Charlotte at Harding, Dec. 7: One of the city’s oldest and best rivalries renews. Both teams have won state titles in recent seasons and both are poised for strong 2012-13 campaigns (and the boys’ game between two top 10 teams won’t be half-bad either).

Ardrey Kell at Myers Park, Jan. 4: The two top teams in the preseason Sweet 16 could meet four times: twice in the regular season, once in the league tournament and maybe in the western regionals.

Charlotte Christian at Providence Day, Jan. 29: There may not be a better girls basketball rivalry in The Observer’s coverage area. And both teams are strong again.

Harding at Berry, Feb. 14: Harding beat Berry 63-44 in the 2012 N.C. 3A Western regional semifinals en route to the state final. Berry probably hasn’t forgotten.
