New bridge opens: The new Mallard Creek Road bridge opened Saturday and will be the permanent replacement for the old bridge that crossed Interstate 85. The bridge was built because the old one will be torn down to accommodate space for the new ramps that will create the I-85 and I-485 turbine interchange. The old bridge will be demolished after Thanksgiving, said Jen Thompson of the N.C. Department of Transportation.Charlotte MLK award nominations: The city is asking for nominations for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Medallion Award. Nominations are due by Dec. 5. The annual award is the highest recognition given by the city to honor the Martin Luther King holiday. Nominees must be residents of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, and the winner will be chosen for promoting King’s ideals.
