Landslide closes Chimney Rock trail

LAKE LURE -- The popular trail to the bottom of a 404-foot waterfall at Chimney Rock State Park will be closed for several weeks due to a landslide, North Carolina park officials say.

The Hickory Nut Falls Trail was closed after a Nov. 14 rainstorm knocked down several trees and sent boulders tumbling onto the trail. It blocked the trail and damaged a foot bridge. Officials say the trail will be closed indefinitely until repairs are completed.

Chimney Rock State Park covers more than 5,700 acres on both sides of Hickory Nut Gorge. The park includes land in Henderson, Rutherford, Polk and Buncombe counties.
