Gastonia woman, 88, dies in fall from building

An 88-year-old woman died Sunday night when she accidentally fell from the second floor of a Gastonia assisted living center, authorities said.

According to Gastonia Police, Nellie Holland was a patient at Morningside of Gastonia at 2755 Union Road.

The fall was reported at 10:23 p.m. and emergency workers said she was dead at the scene.

Gastonia Police Sgt. Jimmy Arndt said Holland had been a patient at Morningside for a couple of days and “wanted to get out.”

He said the facility’s staff had been looking for her Sunday night when she apparently fell accidentally while climbing out a window.

Morningside is an assisted living and Alzheimer’s care facility.

Ted Turner, Morningside’s regional director of operations, said the facility was cooperating with authorities during the investigation.

Although privacy laws prevented him from commenting on the victim, Turner said Morningside was providing support for the family.

He said the facility’s staff and residents were grieving over “a very tragic situation.”
