The Lake Norman area regularly produces some of the state’s best tennis talent.
This fall, the Lake Norman High girls’ tennis team (13-4) proved to be one of the top teams in area again, as Wildcat coach Lezlie Carroll led her team to its third I-Meck title in the last four years with an undefeated team record in league play.Lake Norman Charter (12-1) also had a banner year, winning the Southern Piedmont Conference crown and going undefeated before falling to eventual 1A state champion Mount Airy in the second round of the dual playoffs. The Knights were led by freshman Hannah Archer, who won the 1A singles state title.Bandys, Community School of Davidson, Hough and North Lincoln also made the postseason.Lake Norman girls’ tennis player of the year: Hannah Archer, Lake Norman CharterHannah Archer entered her first season on a high school tennis team not knowing what to expect.By the end of the season, the 14-year-old freshman proved she was already one of the top players in the state by winning the 1A singles title. She defeated the 2011 state champion, Mount Airy’s Jordan Jackson, in the final, 6-0, 6-4.Archer also won the SPC and 4A West Regional singles titles, going 17-3 on the season.Archer will have three more seasons to try to stay on top. She will have a new challenge as her Lake Norman Charter team will move up to a split 2A/3A Gaston County conference.Lake Norman girls’ tennis coach of the year: Lezlie Carroll, Lake NormanLezlie Carroll and her Lake Norman team enjoyed their four-year run in the I-Meck conference, as the Wildcats won three of the four girls’ conference titles in that spanThe Wildcats went unbeaten in league play this season to claim its last league title.
