Hickory police charge man in shooting death

HICKORY Police have charged a 22-year-old man with murder in the shooting death of Billy Chad Dellinger early Tuesday.

Hickory police said the shooting on 19th Avenue N.E. apparently resulted from an argument between Dellinger, 35, and Maurice Centel Mayfield of Hickory.

Mayfield was charged with first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and a probation violation.

Mayfield’s first court appearance will be in District Court in Newton on Wednesday.
