Davidson shocks Vanderbilt

LAKE BUENE VISTA, Fla. De’Mon Brooks scored 19 points and Davidson beat the Vanderbilt Commodores 75-62 Thursday in the first round of the Old Spice Classic.

Nik Cochran and Jake Cohen added 14 points each for the Wildcats (2-2), who will play West Virginia in a winner’s bracket game Friday. Vanderbilt will play Marist.

Kedren Johnson had a career-high 28 points and Kyle Fuller 14 for the Commodores (1-2), who were coming off a 78-48 loss to Oregon.

Baskets by Brooks and Chris Czerapowicz put Davidson ahead 57-52. The Wildcats, keyed by Clint Mann’s dunk and a 3-pointer by Cochran, scored the next nine points and increased their lead to 66-52 with six minutes to go.

No. 13 Missouri 78, Stanford 70: Laurence Bowers scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Tigers (4-0) held off Stanford in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas .

Missouri will face the winner of the first-round game between No. 2 Louisville and Northern Iowa in Friday’s semifinals.

Phil Pressey had 18 points and eight assists for Missouri, which had only three field goals over the final 9 minutes, 10 seconds – all grouped within a 1:57 span starting with 2:12 to play. It didn’t matter as the Tigers were 10 of 11 from the free-throw line during that stretch.. They were 22-for-25 for the game.

The Cardinal, however, was staying with Missouri despite giving up 19 offensive rebounds. The Tigers finished with a 43-39 rebound advantage including 19-12 on the offensive end.

Chasson Randle had 22 points for Stanford (3-2), which has lost two straight after an eight-game winning streak.

The Cardinal, which trailed by 12 during the first half, stayed within reach after halftime and was down 72-68 with 1:15 left on a long jumper by John Gage.

Pressey took over from there, scoring the Tigers’ final four points and assisting on the two before that.

Women

No. 2 Connecticut 95, Wake Forest 34: Breanna Stewart scored 20, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Morgan Tuck each had 16 and the Huskies (3-0) opened with a 12-0 run and carried a 45-12 lead into halftime against the Deacons (2-2) in the opening game of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. It took seven minutes for Wake Forest to hit its first basket and it missed its final 15 shots from the field during the half.

Asia Williams scored 10 to lead Wake Forest, which scored the first two baskets of the second half but could get no closer.

The Huskies will play Marist on Friday while Wake Forest will face Purdue.

South Carolina 45, Hampton 34: Aleighsa Welch had 16 points and 11 rebounds to help the Gamecocks (5-0) fight off the Pirates in the first game of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas. South Carolina limited Keiara Avant, who entered the game averaging 22.0 points for Hampton, to single digits for the first time this season.

The Gamecocks will take on Florida Gulf Coast on at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Morehead State: First-year coach Sean Woods is facing possible disciplinary action after appearing to shove point guard Devon Atkinson during Wednesday’s 81-70 loss at Kentucky. Athletics department spokesman Matt Segal said the situation is being discussed internally and any disciplinary action would be announced Friday morning.

Atkinson fouled out with 5:51 to play, and an agitated Woods shouted at the senior as he walked toward the bench. The coach then appeared to shove Atkinson in the back, pushing him forward, and continued yelling at him during the timeout.
