Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that apparently destroyed a house Sunday morning in Matthews.
The fire was reported about 11:30 a.m. at a house on Phillips Wood Lane, off Matthews-Mint Hill Road a short distance south of Idlewild Road.
Firefighters found flames and smoke pouring from the house when they arrived. Authorities at the scene told reporters later Sunday that the house appeared to be a total loss.
Neighbors said the house’s owners live out of state, and that the residence was being rented to a woman. She was not home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
