Traffic on Interstate 85 near Cabarrus County will be detoured during the next several days as crews tear down the old Mallard Creek Road bridge over the interstate.
Officials with The N.C. Department of Transportation said nightly detours will run from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Nov. 29-Dec. 1 and Dec. 3-4, weather permitting. The detour will direct traffic from I-85 North to Interstate 485 (Exit 48) to U.S. 29 North (Exit 32) to Bruton Smith Boulevard and back to I-85 North. A new bridge, built to accommodate the new on- and off-ramps, is part of the $92.2 million I-85/I-485 turbine interchange. Traffic was shifted to the new bridge Nov. 17. The project is scheduled to be completed in June 2014.Engineers have developed an innovative interchange design that will help complete the heavily traveled Outer Loop of Charlotte.
