Mooresville road to close Wednesday

MOORESVILLE Part of Mazeppa Road, which leads to the town's two major industrial parks, will be closed beginning Wednesday, Dec. 5, for a road realignment project.

The project consists of several phases. The first starts Wednesday and will include realigning 0.3 miles of Mazeppa Road from N.C. 115 to 0.75 miles west of Overhead Bridge Road, state transportation officials announced this week.

Weather permitting, the work is expected to take about six weeks, after which Mazeppa Road will reopen, officials said. South Iredell Industrial Park and Mooresville Business Park are on Mazeppa.

Other phases will include adding a right turn lane at the intersection with N.C. 115, and upgrades to the railroad crossing there. Those phases will begin in spring 2013.

The work is intended to improve safety at the railroad crossing, which doesn't have a signal or stop arm, officials said. The right turn lane will be extended to handle more vehicles.

A detour route has been set up to get around the project. Motorists can take N.C. 801 to Triplett Road to Mazeppa Road.
