The East Lincoln Middle "Walker Warriors" robotics team took first place for mechanical design at the N.C. First Lego League Qualifying Tournament Nov. 17. They advanced to the state FLL regionals in early December. Team members are Claudia Sisk, Jesse Waldrop, Stone Sisk, Autumn Hafley, Evan Barrineau, Thomas Holmes, Connor Smith and Jordan Helton.
In the competition, students design and build a robot to complete missions determined by the National First Lego League. They get 2 1/2 minutes to complete as many missions as possible in order to earn points. Students also complete a research project; this year's assignment was to devise an invention that would improve senior citizens' quality of life.
Additionally, they present their robot to a panel of judges and explain why they built it that way, and describe the relationship between design and functionality. Finally, they compete in a teamwork challenge. Judging categories are robot design, robot performance, research project and teamwork.
