Bridge demolition forces I-85 closure

Motorists using northbound Interstate 85 in north Charlotte are being forced to detour during the nighttime hours for the next few days, while crews demolish the old Mallard Creek Road bridge over the interstate.

The closure and detour is scheduled from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday nights. Work began Thursday night.

Crews for the contractor, Lane Construction, are tearing down the bridge to open the way for new on and off ramps at the I-85 interchange with I-485. That interchange will have a “turbine” format, which is designed to keep traffic moving.

Mallard Creek Road traffic was shifted to the new bridge Nov. 17. The interchange project is scheduled for completion in June 2014.

Northbound motorists are being detoured off I-85 at I-485, then onto U.S. 29 North and Bruton Smith Boulevard, back to I-85 north.
