Compiled by Bill KiserSouth Iredell High Wendy’s winner: South Iredell High student Kaitlyn Kent has been named the state winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, and is one of 12 students nationwide in the running for the national award.Kent, a senior, was surprised with not only the state award but the national Heisman nomination during an awards ceremony held recently at the Troutman high school.Kent is among six female athletes and six male athletes in the running for the national Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, which will go to one male and one female. She and the other finalists will travel to New York City for the awards ceremony, to be held Dec. 7 and televised Dec. 16 on ESPN2.“I am so humbled by this entire experience,” Kent, who recently learned that she had been selected to attend the Air Force Academy next year, said in a prepared release. “I’m so blessed to have this amazing life and am proud to represent not only South Iredell High School, but North Carolina.”Kent, a two-time all-state swimmer, holds conference records in four events and school records in five events.
