Gridlock forum: Where to from here?

The Democratic and Republican congressmen got along famously as they shared a Charlotte stage for an Observer/PNC forum about congressional gridlock Friday night. Many audience members, though, left doubting they’re serious about working together to improve the country.

The parties compromise on smaller policy questions, members of Congress said. It’s the big issues – tax rates, the size and role of government – where they refuse to yield.

That’s understandable. But Congress is as dysfunctional as ever, with America’s future in question. The parties need to come together to solve the nation’s challenges.

The Observer editorial board asked some who attended Friday night to share their thoughts from the evening.
