Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a pedestrian apparently ran into the path of a car late Tuesday night in north Charlotte and was fatally injured.
The incident occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of Statesville Avenue, about a quarter-mile north of Atando Avenue.
Police say the driver of a northbound 2000 Acura reported that a pedestrian ran into the four-lane road, trying to cross from left to right, and was struck by the car. The pedestrian was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center but died during surgery, police say.
The 40-year-old man who was driving the Acura and a passenger were not injured. Police say they stayed at the scene and called police.
The name of the pedestrian has not been released.
No charges have been filed in the case, but police say an investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 704-432-2169.
The stretch of Statesville Avenue immediately north of Atando Avenue has been the scene of at least five pedestrian-involved incidents in recent years, according to Charlotte Department of Transportation data. The most serious, prior to Tuesday night, was in March 2009, when a 50-year-old was struck and suffered serious injuries.
Statesville Avenue has sidewalks in the area of Tuesday night’s fatality.
