PAGELAND, S.C. -- A 16-year-old girl was killed Tuesday evening when a car in which she was riding slammed into a tree in Chesterfield County, the S.C. Highway Patrol says.
The wreck occurred about 8:30 p.m. on Tory Road, near Pageland, troopers say.
Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly says the driver, an 18-year-old from Pageland, was driving southbound on Tory Road in a 1996 Toyota when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and went off the left side of the road. Kelly says the driver then over-corrected and went off the right side of the road, hitting a tree.
The driver was hospitalized with serious injuries at Carolinas Medical Center-Monroe. The passenger, who also was from Pageland, died at the scene. Investigators say neither occupant was wearing a seat belt.
Authorities have not released the name of the victim.
The crash remains under investigation.
