Belk adds 150 jobs as e-sales flourish

Charlotte-based retailer Belk Inc., which has been focusing on online sales as a major part of its growth strategy, is adding 150 management-level jobs in IT and e-commerce.

The jobs will be based at the company’s headquarters at 2801 W. Tyvola Road, which currently has 1,000 employees.

Jobs will be posted in the career section of Belk.com as positions become available, according to the company. Salaries will vary; the company didn’t provide specifics.

To accommodate the expanding workforce, Belk also plans to lease about 50,000 square feet at the Coliseum Centre office complex, next to its headquarters. Nearly 300 employees will move to that new facility starting in March.

The moves come a month after Belk reported a rise in its third-quarter sales and profit, as e-commerce revenue surged and the company completed store remodels. E-commerce sales shot up almost 71 percent.

“This is the fastest growing part of our company,” Adam Orvos, executive vice president of human resources, said in a company statement.

“We’re investing in the company, and hiring talent to build out these digital capabilities will be a cornerstone of this growth.”

As part of its online sales focus, Belk also invested $4.5 million in a 515,000-square-foot online fulfillment center in Jonesville, S.C., which opened in June. That center is expected to create more than 120 jobs over the next five years in the Union County, S.C. area, according to the company.
