Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle early Friday on Prosperity Church Road in northeast Charlotte.
Michael Dennis Case, 53, was walking his dog in the intersection of Prosperity Church Road and Loganville Drive when he was struck by a 1999 Volvo traveling northwest, police said.
University City Division officers charged the driver, James B. Nash of Charlotte, with driving while impaired.
The crash occurred at 3:58 a.m. Medic pronounced Case dead a short time later, and his dog was taken by CMPD Animal Care for treatment for a broken hind leg.
Nash, 65, was arrested at the scene and taken to a local hospital, where his blood was tested for alcohol. He was then taken to the Mecklenburg County Intake Center.
Prosperity Church Road is four lanes in the area, and there are sidewalks. There are also bicycle lanes along that stretch of the road.
From 2007 through 2011, vehicles struck five pedestrians along that stretch of Prosperity Church Road. None of the accidents resulted in a serious injury, according to Charlotte Department of Transportation data.
Prosperity Church Road was closed for nearly four hours early Friday, and that had a major impact on traffic headed to Mallard Creek High School. Students, staff and parents were forced to use alternate routes.
