Contract OK’d for new school in southwest

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education will vote Tuesday on a $12.9 million contract to build a new elementary school in southwest Charlotte.

The school on York Road, which will open in August 2014, will pull students from Lake Wylie and Winget Park elementary schools. This year Lake Wylie has about 630 students and Winget Park has about 950.

Clancy & Theys Construction Co. was the low bidder for the project, and the board will vote on a contract that would clear the way for construction.

The vote is another sign that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is getting back to building new schools as the recession eases. Voters approved a record $516 million in school bonds in 2007. But Mecklenburg County commissioners, who must issue the bonds to make the money available for CMS, dramatically slowed borrowing to cope with a shrinking budget.

CMS recently launched construction on an elementary school in Huntersville that is intended to relieve crowding at Torrence Creek Elementary when it opens in August 2013.

The board is expected to see an updated plan for construction and renovation early next year, with the possibility of another bond vote in November.
