Observations: San Antonio Spurs - Charlotte Bobcats

By Rick Bonnell

• This was the first San Antonio Spurs game veteran official Joey Crawford has refereed since that Halloween night photo went viral on the Internet. Spurs Tim Duncan and Tony Parker were pictured holding toy guns to the head of a Crawford impersonator with a shaved head and Crawford’s No. 17 jersey.

Duncan and Crawford had a well-publicized exchange of angry words during the playoffs years ago.

• Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap said pre-game he thought rookies Jeff Taylor and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist looked tired in the loss in Milwaukee Friday. Part of the learning curve for rookies isn’t just sizing up opponents, but also adapting to the schedule, which can be as busy as four games in five nights.

• Different team, but same approach. I asked Spurs coach Gregg Popovich pre-game about ex-Bobcat Boris Diaw, who started for San Antonio Saturday. Popovich replied “Boris is Boris,” as in still the reluctant shooter/gifted passer he always was.

Diaw left the Bobcats via buyout last season in time to be included on the Spurs’ playoff roster. A lot of Charlotte fans thought he wasn’t giving his best effort, so he drew a bunch of boos Saturday whenever he touched the ball.
