Lake Norman sailboat captain John Ketner dominated the field in winning the Ultimate 20 East Coast Championship regatta, held Nov. 10-11 on Lake Norman during the annual Carolina Keelboat One Design Regatta.
Ketner, in his U-20 named Work Relase, won one of three races held and finished second in the other two, beating out fellow Lake Norman sailor Jordan Wiggins by seven points (5-12).Wiggins, in Running With Scissors, also won a race, but posted finishes of fifth and sixth in the other two starts.Mark Aspland, in Antics, needed a tie-breaker to finish third, with his win in the first of the weekend’s three races giving him the edge over Don Corey and B.J. Jones.Aspland also had finishes of fifth and eighth place, while Corey, in Fore, had finishes of second and a pair of sixth places. Jones, in Rumbullion, had finishes of third, fourth and seventh place.In the other division races held:Ratko Vujicic wound up in a three-way tie with Ken Corsig and John Killeen in the J-70 division points, but won the title by winning the third and final race of the weekend.John Collins won two out of three races and finished second in the third to beat out Vern Heiler for the J-24 division title.Sailing SceneThe 27th-annual Ice Bucket Invitational Regatta will be held Jan. 1 on Lake Norman, with participants staging from the Lake Norman Yacht Club. The regatta is open to participants whose sailboats have a current Lake Norman Keelboat Council PHRF rating.Two races are scheduled – the first beginning approximately 11 a.m., the second at approximately 2 p.m. – with the awards ceremony set for 5 p.m. at the LNYC clubhouse.The entry fee is $25 for USSailing members and $30 for nonmembers, with a $5 late fee for those sending in entry forms after Dec. 21.
