Charlotte Mecklenburg police are looking for a man who tried to stab a store cashier with a screwdriver Saturday night.

The man entered the Family Dollar on South Tryon Street and pretended to make a purchase, police said. When the clerk opened the cash register, the man tried to grab the cash. The clerk quickly closed the drawer, and the man tried to stab the cashier.

Police said the cashier was not hurt and that the man fled in an older model black Chevrolet SUV, possibly a Tahoe.

Police described the man as 30 years old, black, about 6-foot-3, weighing more than 300 pounds.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Crime Stoppers tip line at 704-334-1600.
