Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly joined Bank of America staff in raising awareness of child hunger Tuesday by packing 2,500 backpacks with food for local needy kids as part of Second Harvest Food Bank’s backpacks program.

The bank’s charitable foundation also announced that it will match $1 for every $2 donated to food banks in the country or the nonprofit Feeding America. The foundation has agreed to total match of $1.5 million for the cause.

The risk of childhood hunger grows during the holidays when school meals are not available. In the 19 counties served by Second Harvest Food Bank, it’s estimated 486,000 people live at or below the poverty level including 170,000 children.
