The winner: I like having the dish soap out by the sink sometimes but don’t want the big bottle on the counter. So I reused a liquid hand soap dispenser for dish soap. It looks better than the Palmolive bottle and it’s very easy to use. Elizabeth Thompson, Charlotte
Personalizing gift cards
I like to personalize gift cards to restaurants by picking up a take-out menu or printing a menu from the website. I can then write on the menu a special note: “Merry Christmas, Love Debra” and then attach the gift card. If I plan to enjoy the meal with my friend, I will write on the menu “Save the date, January ___, 2013 for a special dinner for two” and attach the card. Debra Nevels, Charlotte
Paint pen covers nicks
I used a large Sharpie paint pen to touch up nicks and spots on white woodwork. They come in oil- and water-based and have a convenient chisel point. It’s easier than opening a can of paint, and the point makes a neat, clean line. They are a staple in my cleaning supplies. Miriam Pittman, Boone
