Police identify victim in fatal crash

Authorities have identified the driver killed in a wreck in northwest Charlotte on Dec. 3.

Marvin Sanchez, 36, died around 3 a.m. after he lost control of his BMW in the 7800 block of Bellhaven Boulevard, then hit a utility pole and a tree. The car caught on fire. A passenger in the car, identified by police as 29-year-old Jairo Blanco, was injured.

Two Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers discovered the wreck while driving through the area while on routine patrol.

The officers called the Charlotte Fire Department and Medic to the scene and also attempted to put the fire out with extinguishers while they waited for more help, according to a news release from CMPD. The officers managed to get Blanco out of the burning car but were unable to pull Sanchez free.

Medic officials pronounced Sanchez dead when they arrived at the scene. CMPD is still investigating the case.
