Epcon Communities Carolinas LLC is seeking a rezoning from the town to build its Courtyards at Cornelius project on 8.27 acres on Village Center Drive, beside the Magnolia Estates subdivision, according to Cornelius Planning Department documents.The Cornelius Planning Board is scheduled to consider the request at its meeting at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Ave. The Planning Board makes recommendations to the Cornelius Board of Commissioners, which is scheduled to consider the request at its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at Town Hall.Lowe’s YMCA gym reopensLowe’s YMCA in Mooresville held a ribbon-cutting Dec. 11 to mark the official reopening of its gymnasium.The gym had been closed since Sept. 20, when a sprinkler system unleashed hundreds of gallons of water, damaging the floor.YMCA members play basketball and volleyball in the gym. It’s also used for afterschool activities and group exercise classes.“The gymnasium is more than just a place for pick-up basketball, it’s where a lot of people in our community come together,” Erika Arnold, YMCA regional executive director, said in a news release. “The closing of the gymnasium has impacted a lot of kids, families and adults. We’re excited to reopen its doors and bring that energy back to our facility.”Concord road closingUtility work closed a lane along Franklin Avenue NW, beginning last week.The two-phase project will result in new water and sewer lines, city officials said.Phase one began last week and is scheduled to last six weeks. One lane is closed as crews replace the water line between Crowell Drive NW and Spring Street NW. The second phase, which will require a road closure and detour, will begin in January after the first phase is complete.
