More than 500 pounds of marijuana was discovered this week at a Rowan County home, nearly three months after the arrest of an accused drug trafficker who lived at the residence.
Authorities say the drugs were found Tuesday by a property owner who was doing a construction project at the residence in the 200 block of Russell Farm Road. The drugs were inside of a metal compartment that had been buried under the ground, according to a news release from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
The newly-discovered drugs have a wholesale value of $531,000, authorities said. Investigators say the drugs apparently have been hidden underground since a Sept. 13 police search at the home.
In the earlier case, deputies found 40 pounds of marijuana and arrested 31-year-old Ismael Garcia-Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, who was charged with trafficking in marijuana, was still being held without bond Friday at the Rowan County Detention Center.
The sheriff’s office said additional charges and arrests are possible after the discovered of the drugs this week.
