Three CMPD officers were injured over the weekend in two separate incidents in which suspected intoxicated drivers ran into their cars while the officers were responding to other calls for service.
Around 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 15, Officers J. Wassenaar and W. Reinke were investigating a car crash on East Independence Boulevard near Eastway Drive.
Steven Andrew Morris, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu outbound on East Independence Boulevard, struck the rear of a CMPD marked patrol vehicle as well as a second marked patrol vehicle.
Wassenaar and Reinke were standing outside of their vehicles when the crash occurred. Both were struck by one of the CMPD vehicles during the crash.
The two officers were taken to Carolinas Medical Center by MEDIC with serious, non- life threatening injuries. Morris was also transported with minor injuries.
Then around 2:07 a.m. on Dec. 16, CMPD Officer Prince Blue and other officers were directing traffic for the previous officer-involved crash. Blue was inside his police vehicle on Independence Boulevard with the blue lights on when an intoxicated driver failed to heed his emergency lights and struck Blues vehicle.
Blue sustained injuries which left him unconscious. He was taken to CMC where he regained consciousness and is currently being evaluated.
Charges are pending in both crashes.
Anyone with information about these collisions is asked to call the CMPD Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169.
