Rinker chosen as next Cornelius mayor

70T433N
HO -
Lynette Rinker will succeed Jeff Tarte as Cornelius mayor.

Cornelius officials unanimously selected commissioner Lynette Rinker as the town’s next mayor Monday night. She will succeed Jeff Tarte, who leaves Jan. 7 to serve as state senator.

“It’s a no-brainer,” said commissioner Dave Gilroy. “Lynette is really the perfect candidate to fill this role, (given) her experience, knowledge, commitment and capacity.”

Still to be determined is how commissioners will fill Rinker’s spot when she becomes mayor. Options include letting the board select a new commissioner and waiting until the November elections to fill the seat.

The board will revisit the empty commissioner seat on Jan. 7, when Tarte is expected to officially step down as mayor.

Tarte will represent the newly created District 41, which includes the towns of Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mint Hill and Matthews.
