Heavy congestion has cleared on Independence

Traffic is still moving slowly on portions of inbound Independence Boulevard, though the heaviest of congestion has cleared after a serious wreck earlier this morning.

The wreck, which was reported around 7:15 a.m. near Eastway Drive, closed two lanes of Independence in the area for more than an hour. A disabled vehicle then briefly closed another lane nearby.

All lanes of the interstate had reopened by 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, though the N.C. Department of Transportation was still showing some congestion just south of Eastway Drive around 9:12 a.m.

In all, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are currently on the scene of about a dozen wrecks. That includes one in the 11700 block of Steele Creek Road that closed a portion of the road just south of Westinghouse Boulevard.

Other collisions were reported in the 1900 block of Randolph Road, at Albemarle and Harrisburg roads in northeast Charlotte, and on Fairview Road at Park South Drive in the South Park area.
