Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say an off-duty officer shot at a man who was trying to break into his home early Tuesday.
Police said they were called to the 4800 block of Belmar Place Road in north Charlotte just before 1 a.m. Tuesday after a woman said she heard someone kicking in the back door of her home.
Authorities say the womans husband an officer who was off duty at the time went to investigate the noise and saw the break-in suspect at the back of the home.
The officer fired his personal weapon at the suspect. Authorities said he feared for his safety. Police said the suspect then fled.
Police later charged Thomas Howard Powell, 21, with attempted first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Meanwhile, police said internal affairs will review the officers actions. The officers name has not yet been released.
