Shelter hours extended through winter

Cooperative Christian Ministry prepares to help homeless more in cold weather

The Cooperative Christian Ministry has extended its shelter hours in preparation for cold weather.

The schedule change coincides with a recent forecast by Brad Panovich, chief meteorologist at the Observer’s news partner, WCNC-TV (Channel 6), which called for nighttime temperatures to dip below the 30s throughout the rest of December.

The Samaritan House Night Shelter will open one hour early, at 6 p.m. each night, and close two hours later, at 9 a.m. the next morning. Normal shelter hours are from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., but CCM staff hopes to help more of the Cabarrus County homeless population by extending its hours.

“We know that between Dec. 15 and March 15 is the coldest time of the year, and there’s also the possibility of inclement weather,” said Marshall Smith, shelter and housing manager for CCM.

The changes also will allow shelter guests who are not working or attending school more time to be in a warm place.

During severe weather events, CCM will decide early each morning whether to open its offices. During inclement weather, check with CCM before visiting any of its offices, shelters or food pantries.

The Samaritan House Night Shelter, however, is open year-round, regardless of the weather.
