Annnnd she’s back.
The 16-foot great white shark, Mary Lee, that was spotted swimming in the Atlantic Ocean around the Myrtle Beach coast in November and earlier this month has returned, according to her latest ping on Wednesday on the tracking website Ocearch Global Shark Tracker.
The tracking device attached to Mary Lee, the shark named after OCEARCH founder Chris Fischer’s mother, last pinged at 12:22 p.m. Wednesday off the shore of North Myrtle Beach, according to the site at 1:30 p.m. The shark’s tracking device pings when she breaks the surface of the water.
At 12:05 p.m. Wednesday, the shark made a close brush by the coast near 82nd Avenue North in Myrtle Beach before going north, according to the site. The shark has been meandering off the Grand Strand’s coast since her first ping on November 27 near Georgetown.
Since then, she has traveled to Oak Island, N.C., deep into the Atlantic Ocean and then south to the Savannah, Ga., area before coming back north.
The shark was tagged Sept. 17 near Cape Cod, according to the site. Mary Lee is a mature female 16 feet long and weighing 3,456 pounds when she was tagged.
In her description, Fischer wrote he had been waiting for “a special shark to name after 1 / 8his mother 3 / 8 and this is truly the most historic and legendary fish I have ever been a part of.”
