Man escapes police after high-speed pursuit through Charlotte

Authorities say a man who was driving a stolen Mercedes escaped arrest after a pursuit Wednesday night in north Charlotte.

The pursuit started shortly before 10 p.m., when an N.C. Highway Patrol trooper checked the license plates on the Mercedes along Interstate 77 and determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen.

Troopers say the driver of the car pulled away, and that started a pursuit. Troopers chased the driver down I-77 and Interstate 85, with the Mercedes driver sometimes exceeding 100 mph.

The driver got off I-85 at Sugar Creek Road, authorities say, with police in pursuit. The chase continued into the Plaza Midwood community, and troopers say the driver eventually jumped from the car at Parkwood and Seigle avenues.

A foot chase followed, with the man getting away. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police called in their helicopter and K-9 dog search unit, but they were not able to find the man.

The driver is described as a black male, about 6 feet tall, weighing 220 pounds. He was wearing a grey hoodie and blue jeans. Anyone with information about the man is asked to call 911.
