Vinnie's Grill closes in South End

Vinnie’s Sardine Grill & Raw Bar, a longtime Charlotte bar and restaurant in South End, has closed, according to staff who worked there.

General manager David Luckey was cleaning out the restaurant Thursday evening. “Sunday night was our last night,” he told the Observer.

A second Vinnie’s location at Lake Norman, on Williamson Road in Mooresville, remains open. Luckey said there currently aren’t any plans to close that restaurant.

The restaurant on South Boulevard opened in 1993, according to a history listed on Vinnie’s website. It’s located near the corner of East and South boulevards, with a distinctive neon sign and fish netting marking the exterior.

There were Vinnie’s locations formerly in northwest Mecklenburg, near Mountain Island Lake, and in Matthews, according to news reports.

Luckey said the restaurant had been struggling due to general economic conditions.

“This economy makes everybody broke,” he said.
