A Charlotte man recently arrested for his alleged involvement in a 1991 rape has been charged in two more rape cases that also occurred that year, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
Drayton Lamar Thompson, 42, was charged Friday with abducting two victims from the 1300 block of LaSalle Street and the 900 block of Beatties Ford Road and sexually assaulting them 21 years ago, police said. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said its Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit was able to match DNA evidence in those cases to Thompson.
He was originally arrested 10 days ago, after the cold case unit discovered his DNA matched evidence in another 1991 rape that happened in the 2600 block of Beechnut Drive. Thompson now faces eight counts of first-degree rape, three counts of first-degree kidnapping, one count of second-degree kidnapping, felony conspiracy and first-degree sex offense for his involvement in the three cases, police said.
Thompson is being held in the Mecklenburg County jail on $500,000 bond.
