Hickory High senior center midfielder Carlos Sevilla is the 2012 Observer soccer Player of the Year.
Each year, the Observer names all-star teams, selected by the newspapers high school sports staff, to recognize top players in its 133-school coverage area in North and South Carolina.
Sevilla, a three-time All-Region pick, scored 24 goals and 13 assists while leading Hickory to a 27-2 record and an appearance in the N.C. 3A state championship game.
His coach, Brian Jillings, is the All-Observer Coach of the Year.
Jillings and Sevilla double as the Observer All-Region Coach and Player of the Year.
Myers Parks Hussein Ali, the Southwestern 4A player of the year, is the All-Mecklenburg player of the year, signifying him as the top player in Mecklenburg County.
Ali led his team to the N.C. 4A state championship game.
Butlers Jim Mueller is the All-Mecklenburg coach of the year.
Mueller led his team, which had struggled in past years, to a state ranking this season while battling early onset Alzheimers. Butler finished with a 12-9-1 record this season.
Nick Gardner, Charlotte Latin, GK, Jr.: N.C. soccer coaches all-state pick had a 0.64 goals against average and nine shutouts. He allowed 11 goals all season.
Emmett Horton, Myers Park, Sr., D: Two-time all-conference and two-time all-region pick made the soccer coaches all-state team this year after leading his team to the Southwestern 4A title.
Marcos Vargas, Hickory, Jr., D: All-region, all-conference and soccer coaches all-state pick led his team to the N.C. 3A state championship game.
Ethan Good, Cuthbertson, Jr., D: N.C. soccer coaches all-state pick helped lead Cuthbertson to the N.C. 2A state championship.
Hussein Ali, Myers Park, Sr., MF: Led Mustangs in scoring for past two seasons. Two-time all-state pick was region player of the year.
Brendan McDonough, Charlotte Catholic, So., MF: 18 goals and 13 assists for team captain and all-state pick. Also has a 4.0 GPA.
Carlos Sevilla, Hickory, Sr., MF: Two-time all-state pick scored 24 goals to go with 13 assists and was Northwestern 3A/4A conference player of the year.
Omar Solis, South Iredell, Jr., F: N.C. soccer coaches association all-state pick led his team to a 20-2-2 record and a No. 5 finish in the state coaches 2A poll.
Jason Andrejchak, Robinson, Sr., F: N.C. soccer coaches all-state pick had 77 career goals and was South Piedmont player of the year and the Observers Cabarrus News player of the year.
Michael Basnett, Hough, Jr., F: 24 goals and 14 assists for the I-Meck 4A and Region 10 player of the year. Basnett was also an all-state pick.
Axel Rojas, South Mecklenburg, Jr., F: All-state, all-region and all-conference pick had 14 goals and 16 assists for one of the areas top teams.

All-Observer/All-Region player of the year: Sevilla, Hickory
All-Observer/All-Region coach of the year: Brian Jillings, Hickory
All-Mecklenburg player of the year: Ali, Myers Park
All-Mecklenburg coach of the year: Jim Mueller, Butler
