Charlotte Latin’s Eve Davis finished her season by leading her team to its ninth straight N.C. 3A independent schools volleyball championship.

Latin (38-1) rallied from being down two sets to beat rival Charlotte Country Day 3-2 in October. Davis, who had 32 kills, 26 digs and two aces in the finals, is the 2012 Charlotte Observer Player of the Year.

The Observer annually names All-Observer teams in each sport to honor the best athletes in its coverage area, which includes 133 teams in North and South Carolina. The teams are selected by the newspaper’s high school sports staff.

Davis doubles as the All-Mecklenburg player of the year, signifying her as the top player in Mecklenburg County.

She was named an All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, one of 100 players from 32 states.

Carson’s Aimee Cloninger, one of two seniors on a team that reached its first state final, is the All-Region player of the year. Her coach, Kelan Rogers, is the Observer’s All-Region coach of the year.

Two legendary coaches share the All-Mecklenburg coach of the year award: Charlotte Latin’s Suzie Pignetti and Ardrey Kell’s Zoe Bell.

Pignetti, named one of two national coaches of the year by the AVCA, won her 15th state title this season. She won six at Charlotte Country Day. She has a career record of 745-150.

Bell led her team to a 31-1 record and the 2012 N.C. 4A championship. Bell’s Knights lost in the 2009 championship but delivered their coach her fifth state title. She won four at Providence. Bell is one championship shy of the N.C. public school all-time record.
