New Year

First Footin’ at Rural Hill

11 a.m. Tuesday. Rural Hill, 4431 Neck Road, Huntersville. 704-875-3113 ruralhill.net/FirstFootin.asp.

Experience the Scottish New Year tradition of First Footin’, where participants walk the borders of Rural Hill and listen to stories of history and folklore. The walk is 2-3 miles, so dress comfortably. A dramatic reading of the story “Stone Soup” and a luncheon will follow. The event is free; bring something to share at the luncheon. Jumpin’ Java

Lovin’ Lindy presents Jumpin’ Java, a free swing dance class followed by an open dance held the last Friday of the month. The beginners’ lesson starts at 7; the open dance runs 8-9 p.m.

Kids eat free at IKEA

Kids 12 and under can eat a free combo meal (value $2.49) at IKEA through Tuesday. You do not have to buy an adult meal to get the free kid’s meal, so this is truly a freebie. Choices include macaroni and cheese, chicken tenders, and, of course, Swedish meatballs.

Puppet show at McDowell Nature Center

Kids ages 2-8 are invited to this free puppet show, which will explore ideas about conservation. Call the nature center for info/registration.

Movie

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’

University City Regional Library invites teens ages 12-18 to this free movie showing. There will be snacks as well.
