Butler High

Flapjack Fundraiser: The Performing Arts Department will host a Flapjack Breakfast to raise funds for the spring musical. The breakfast will be held at Applebee’s in Matthews from 8 to 10 a.m. Jan. 5. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at Butler during the lunch periods on Jan.2-4 or online at http://flapjacks.eventbee.com.

Football awards: Senior Des Lawrence won the Gridiron Player of the Year at the annual Greater Charlotte Football Awards Banquet held Dec. 8. Varsity Head Football Coach Jason Estep won Coach of the Year.

Gatorade player: Senior Eve Davis has been named the 2012-13 Gatorade N.C. Volleyball Player of the Year by The Gatorade Co. in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports. The award recognizes athletic and academic excellence and commendable character. Davis will play volleyball at N.C. State University in fall,.

Providence Day

Scholar-Athlete: Varsity football team member John Carrick has been named Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The senior received the award at the annual Greater Charlotte Football Awards Banquet. The awards honor excellence in achievement on and off the football field by students, coaches and teams.

Field hockey award: Sophomore Sarah Heacock, girls’ varsity field hockey team member and Charlotte Field Hockey Club member, was named December’s Club Athlete of the Month by USA Field Hockey.

All-region team: Mackenzie Busby was named to a 2012 Harrow Sports/National Field Hockey Coaches Association High School All-Region Team. The senior is one of 12 individuals chosen for the South Region team.

South Meck

Open house: The World Language Magnet school will have an open house from 6 until 7 p.m. Jan. 14. The program will be discussed followed by guided tours given by the students.

CMS

British studies: Two juniors will be chosen by an essay contest to win a two-week trip to England this summer. Sponsored by the British American Business Council of North Carolina, the ACS British Studies program focuses on 400 years of British history. Contact a school counselor for details. The deadline is Jan. 18.

Carolina Panthers

Spirit rock: South Meck won this year’s Spirit Rock Contest. Second runners up were East Meck, Hickory Career and Arts Magnet High, Lansdowne Elementary and West Meck. Second runners up were Bailey Middle, Louisburg Elementary, Monarch Elementary, Myers Park High and Quail Hollow Middle.

Teacher recognition: Media Specialist Kevin Washburn has recently earned National Board Certification in Media/Library science.
