The Lincoln County Health Department is recommending that residents avoid contact with the water near an unnamed cove in the 4400 block of Burton Lane in Denver for the next couple of days after a wastewater spill on Thursday.
The Lincoln County public works department said a possible lightening strike caused the spill at a sewage pump station, which caused the pump to fail.
The department estimated that 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage were spilled and flowed into the cove in the residential community off Burton Lane. There are about 30 to 40 properties in the immediate area, said Don Chamblee, the Lincoln County public works director
That cove water in turn runs into Lake Norman in the Catawba River Basin.
Chamblee said that officials were able to get the pumps running again soon after they discovered the problem.
He said the department has already treated the area. The department will take water samples in the next couple of days to make sure there is no untreated water left in the cove.
Chamblee said that the warning to avoid contact with the water in the area should be lifted within the next three days.
