With the help of physical therapy, Lucy is still using her leg and is doing well.

Lucy is home for the holidays, and running around like humans do this time of year.

The 6-month-old Collie mix is apparently responding well to physical therapy on her right front leg, which doctors had recommended for amputation at one point. An October story in South Charlotte News about the dog’s broken leg – discovered by Waxhaw shelter Carolina PAWS – led to her adoption within days.

According to a correspondence sent by new owner Tania Bowers to Carolina PAWS, Lucy (formerly named Vivienne) has no sign of a limp “unless she has overdone it, or – as we discovered this week – if it is raining.”

Bowers said she would discuss with a veterinarian whether the dog might need occasional medicine.

Lucy weighed 16 pounds when she was adopted and now weighs 27 pounds, Bowers said. She’s also coexisting well with Labradors that live with the family in the Lake Wylie area.

“She is doing amazing! The arthritis is not too bad right now, so the therapy they are trying does seem to be working,” said Carolina PAWS president Robin Essenmacher.

It’s not known how or when the dog’s leg was broken.

According to Carolina PAWS, the family renamed the dog Lucy because she’s a “little redhead with good intentions but always seems to get in predicaments.”

Essenmacher noted that an eventual amputation hasn’t been ruled out.

“Several vets have expressed that over time the arthritis will get to a point that it will cause her daily pain, and amputating the leg may be her only relief from the pain,” she said. ”For now, she is enjoying life and her new family to the fullest.”
