Wreck blocks I-85 in Cabarrus

A wreck is causing big traffic problems on Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County on Monday afternoon.

It is at least the third major collision-related problem since 6 a.m. on southbound I-85 in Cabarrus.

This time, the wreck has blocked all southbound lanes near mile marker 59. The N.C. Highway Patrol says the wreck happened about 10:45 a.m. near the rest stop. Authorities say it will be at least 1:30 p.m. before the lanes are open again.

Traffic was detoured off I-85 at Exit 60, and long backups are being reported in Rowan and Cabarrus counties on I-85.

Motorists headed toward Charlotte from Rowan and Davidson counties can expect long delays. A possible alternate route is U.S. 29, but that also is clogged early Monday afternoon.
