Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a man they say fatally shot a 19-year-old and wounded another Tuesday night during an apparent drug transaction in east Charlotte.

Dontae Leverne Torrance, 19, was charged Wednesday morning with murder, attempted murder, conspiracy and obtaining property by false pretenses.

Police said Torrance shot Benjamin Sky McDaniel, 19, and Jerik Simmons, 21, in the 8400 block of Goldsfield Drive about 7:38 p.m. McDaniel died from his injuries. Simmons underwent surgery and was in stable condition early Wednesday. The victims apparently knew each other.

Paramedics treated both men at the scene near Jewelflower Road, and transported them to Carolinas Medical Center.

CMPD homicide detectives were looking for two suspects believed to be involved in the shootings but haven’t released information about the second suspect. Police said the victims and suspects knew each other and were believed to be involved in a drug transaction.

The suspects were last seen fleeing on foot. By late Tuesday, detectives were scouring the neighborhood to find witnesses.

Anyone with information is urged to call 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. April Bethea contributed
