One woman was killed and eight others – including five children – were injured Tuesday after their crowded Mitsubishi Montero ran off a rain-slick Sunset Road in north Charlotte and crashed into a tree.

The 2001 Mitsubishi, driven by He Kung, ran through a yard at 1825 Sunset Road late Tuesday morning and struck the large tree, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police detective Kevin Allred said.

Tuan Iang, He Kung’s wife, was sitting behind the driver’s seat and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. She died Tuesday night.

The other eight occupants were still being treated at CMC, but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, said Allred, an investigator with CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit.

The wreck involved only the Mitsubishi, an SUV, and the nine occupants were apparently all related, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Capt. Mike Campagna said.

Speed, rain and a wet road appear to be factors in the crash, Allred said. It was raining at the time of the wreck, he said, and He Kung apparently drove off the right side of the road, through the yard.

The major crash unit is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is urged to call Allred at 704-336-8862.
