The two indie bands (the former is a Pittsburgh trio, the latter Brooklyn-based) make unpolished punk with ample angst and recordings that serve to remind listeners what emo records sounded like before mall punk was mainstream.
Carolina Gator Gumbo/Jackomo

Charlotte’s Carolina Gator Gumbo has cooked up Creole and Cajun music since the early ’90s, while Asheville-based Jackomo is a newer Cajun country combo. Both have long traveled to learn the Louisiana tradition from its masters.
