Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a deadly shooting involving an officer.

Investigators say Spencer Mims III, 55, was shot Sunday night on Cooper Drive in south Charlotte.

Authorities say Mims' father requested officers to his home because he was having problems with his son.

When officers arrived they say Mims was holding a box cutter to his throat.

Authorities say Officer Michael Whitlock used his taser on Mims when he ignored orders to drop the box cutter.

Investigators say Mims then charged at officers with the box cutter and that's when Officer Jeremy Donaldson shot him.

Mims was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where he died.

Officers Whitlock and Donaldson have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
