Westbound Fairview Rd. lanes closed

A broken water main has forced the closure of the westbound lanes of Fairview Road near Providence Road in southeast Charlotte, city officials say.

The closure is at Oglukian Road, which is between Providence and Carmel roads. All eastbound lanes are open, so traffic headed toward Matthews will not be affected. But westbound traffic is able to get past the scene only in the turning lane.

Backups are being reported, and a spokeswoman for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities says the lanes likely will be closed through the evening hours.

Motorists who normally use westbound Fairview Road don’t face any easy alternates. One route would be to take Providence Road northbound to Sharon Amity Road, then take that back to Sharon Lane and Fairview Road. Another alternate would be Rea Road to Colony Road to Fairview Road.
