More than 20 dogs face possible euthanization after an area couple is cited for a zoning ordinance violation.
Hope for All Dogs' kennel is run out of the Roney's home in southwest Charlotte. However, the city has notified them they are violating zoning laws. The notice says the Roneys can't operate a commercial kennel in a residential zone.
The couple started the shelter in August of 2012. The organization takes in animals who wouldn't otherwise have a second chance in other shelters.
"We wanted to start the rescue just because we felt there was a need for special need dogs and seniors and because we really didn't see anything. It's just something that pulls at our heart strings," said Lisa Roney.
The couple currently cares for 27 dogs in their two story home.
"We take a lot of heart worm positive dogs in. We have a dog that has epilepsy, that's on medication right now to keep that under control. We've also taken in animals that have gotten hit by a car," said Lisa.
The dogs also spend time in a fenced in kennel adjacent to the home. The Roneys say they were shocked when they received notice from the city. Lisa called the city to find out more.
"They told us that they received an anonymous phone call that we were running an illegal commercial kennel."
The couple has appealed the violation. They should have a court date in the coming days. They've applied for non-profit status and hope that will make a difference in terms of the commercial zoning violation.
Lisa says she's not sure what they'll do if they can't continue to run the shelter out of their home. They'll look for alternative housing for the dogs, but worry that will be expensive. Lisa has a message for the person who made the anonymous phone call.
"Whoever this person is, you know, they're hurting the animals. The whole purpose of a rescue group is to rescue the animals. You know they're always going to be the victim. They don't have a voice. They can't stick up for themselves."
NBC Charlotte reached out by phone to city planning officials. Those calls were not returned.
