Airport officials seized a gun at a security checkpoint at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Tuesday morning after Transportation Security Administration officers discovered an unloaded .357-caliber gun and ammunition in a passenger’s carry-on bag.
Erik Weir, 40, was cited for carrying a concealed weapon at 9:20 a.m. Airport police confiscated the bag and weapon, which is the first discovered at the airport this year, TSA officials said. Last year, TSA officers confiscated 16 firearms at checkpoints in the Charlotte airport. Nationally, more than 1,500 firearms were discovered at TSA checkpoints in 2012, an increase from the 1,320 confiscated in 2011.
